LHC Run 3 and Run 4 prospects for heavy-ion physics with LHCb

چکیده
The largely unknown parton distribution functions of nuclei and the similarities observed between high-multiplicity pp pPb events compared to PbPb, often described by means hydrodynamics, are main motivations for an extended data taking program during LHC Run 3 4. future increase in luminosity combined with LHCb unique detector capabilities will allow perform new precise measurements. Moreover, upgraded internal gas target is going be installed 3, allowing a wider choice species density up two orders magnitude. Prospects presented on both collider fixed programs.

Heavy Ion Physics at Lhc
The study of heavy ion interactions constitutes an important part of the experimental program outlined for the Large Hadron Collider under construction at CERN and expected to be operational by 2006. ALICE 1 is the single detector having the capabilities to explore at the same time most of the characteristics of high energy heavy ion interactions. Specific studies of jet quenching and quarkonia...
متن کاملHeavy Ion Physics with CMS at LHC
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) plans to operate as a heavy ion collider for one month each year starting in 2007. LHC will be capable of accelerating a variety of ions up to beam energies of 7 TeV/charge. The design, peak and three-hour-fill-averaged luminosities are presented in Table 1 along with the maximum center of mass energy[1]. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) [2] experiment is a genera...
متن کاملLHC Physics Potential vs . Energy : Considerations for the 2011 Run
Parton luminosities are convenient for estimating how the physics potential of Large Hadron Collider experiments depends on the energy of the proton beams. I quantify the advantage of increasing the beam energy from 3.5 TeV to 4 TeV. I present parton luminosities, ratios of parton luminosities, and contours of fixed parton luminosity for gg, ud̄, qq, and gq interactions over the energy range rel...
متن کاملLhcb: Status and Physics Prospects
We discuss the current status and the physics prospects at the LHCb detector, the dedicated B physics detector at the LHC, due to start data taking in 2007.
متن کاملHeavy Ion Physics at the LHC
The first Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC are little more than a year away. This paper discusses some of the exciting measurements which the experiments will be able to perform in the very first run, even with modest luminosity, and gives a very short overview of some of the most interesting ones attainable with more extended runs. The dedicated Heavy-Ion experiment ALICE, but also ATLAS and CMS, e...
